How to Fix MYOB Activation Error
MYOB will not activate, says your serial number is invalid, reports that the activation limit has been reached, or keeps asking you to activate every time you open it.
At QuickFix Bookkeeping, the constraint behind most of these: activation is tied to both your serial number and the specific computer. Change the hardware, reinstall Windows, or move to a new machine, and MYOB treats it as a new installation against your licence count. It is not broken, you have simply run out of activations.
What Causes This
Activation limit reached
Your licence allows a set number of installations. Old machines still count unless deactivated.
Hardware changed
A new hard drive or motherboard makes MYOB see a different computer and demand reactivation.
No internet access
Online activation cannot reach MYOB servers, usually blocked by a firewall or proxy.
Subscription lapsed
An expired subscription prevents activation regardless of the serial number.
How to Fix It
METHOD 1Check Your Subscription FirstSerial rejected
1Sign in to your MYOB account and confirm the subscription is active and payment is current. An expired subscription blocks activation even with a perfectly valid serial number.
2Confirm the serial number you are entering matches the product you have installed. Serial numbers are product-specific, and an AccountRight serial will not activate a different MYOB product.
3Retrieve the correct serial from your MYOB account rather than from an old email, which may reference a lapsed licence.
METHOD 2Free Up an ActivationLimit reached
1Your licence permits a fixed number of activations. Machines you no longer use still consume one each until they are released.
2Contact MYOB to have old activations cleared, or deactivate on the old machine before decommissioning it if you still have access.
3This is the most common cause after replacing a computer, and it is entirely administrative rather than technical.
METHOD 3Fix a Blocked ConnectionActivation times out
1Online activation needs to reach MYOB servers. Confirm the machine has working internet access, then temporarily disable antivirus and any firewall and retry.
2On a corporate network, a proxy may be blocking the connection without any visible message. Ask IT to allow MYOB traffic.
3If the machine genuinely has no internet access, MYOB offers an offline activation path. Contact MYOB support for the confirmation code process.
METHOD 4Stop Repeated Activation PromptsAsks every time you open it
1If MYOB activates successfully but demands activation again on the next launch, it cannot write its activation record.
2Run MYOB as administrator once, complete the activation, then close and reopen it normally. That usually writes the record permanently.
3If it persists, the folder holding the activation data has a permissions fault, or antivirus is reverting the file after each write. Add the MYOB folders to your antivirus exclusion list.
Deactivate Before You Decommission
The simplest way to avoid this entirely: release the activation on an old computer before you retire it. Once the machine is wiped or gone, clearing that activation requires a support call and a wait, usually at the worst possible moment because you are trying to get running on the new machine today.
