How to Fix MYOB Essentials Error

MYOB Essentials will not load, a page hangs, data you entered disappears, or features you expect are simply not there.

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, the first thing to establish: MYOB has been moving Essentials customers onto MYOB Business. A feature that vanished or moved is often a product change rather than a fault. Before troubleshooting, confirm which product you are actually in, because the two have different screens and different capabilities.

What Causes This

Product has changed

Essentials customers have been transitioned to MYOB Business. Screens and features moved.

Browser cache

Essentials is browser-based. A stale cache causes hangs, blank pages, and phantom errors.

Subscription lapsed

An expired or unpaid subscription restricts access, often without a clear message.

User permissions

A restricted user role hides features entirely rather than showing them greyed out.

How to Fix It

METHOD 1Rule Out the Browser FirstPages hang or come back blank
1

Open MYOB in an incognito window and sign in. If it works there, the problem is your normal browser rather than MYOB.

2

Clear the cache and cookies, then disable extensions one at a time. Ad blockers and password managers are the usual culprits.

3

Use a current version of a mainstream browser. Essentials is a web application and an outdated browser causes failures that look exactly like software faults.

METHOD 2Check Your Subscription StatusAccess restricted with no clear reason
1

Sign in to your MYOB account and confirm the subscription is active and the payment method on file has not expired.

2

A lapsed subscription restricts access progressively rather than cutting you off cleanly, which produces confusing partial failures.

3

Confirm you are signed in with the correct MYOB account. Businesses with several files often have more than one login, and signing in with the wrong one shows you the wrong data or nothing at all.

METHOD 3Check Your User RoleA feature is missing entirely
1

MYOB hides features your role does not permit rather than greying them out, so a missing button looks like a bug.

2

Ask the account owner to check your user role and permissions. Payroll and banking are the areas most commonly restricted.

3

Sign out completely and back in after any permission change, since the new role only applies to a fresh session.

METHOD 4Recover Data That DisappearedEntries vanished after saving
1

Check whether the entry saved under a different date or a different period than you expected. Filtering rather than data loss explains most disappearances.

2

If you were working when the connection dropped, the entry may never have saved at all. Re-enter it, then verify it persists after a refresh.

Confirm Which Product You Are In

A great deal of the confusion around Essentials comes from following instructions written for a different product. Screens, menus, and available features differ between Essentials, MYOB Business, and AccountRight. Check the product name on screen before following any guide, including this one, or you will be hunting for a menu that does not exist.
