Reset QuickBooks Registration Timer: Fix the Trial Error

QuickBooks says your trial has expired, keeps demanding activation every time you open it, or refuses to accept a valid license. You are locked out of your own company file.

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, the fix is a single file. QuickBooks stores its registration state in a file called qbregistration.dat. When that file is damaged, QuickBooks cannot read its own license and falls back to trial-expired behaviour. Rename the file, and QuickBooks rebuilds a clean one on the next launch.

What Causes This

Damaged registration file

The qbregistration.dat file is corrupted, so QuickBooks cannot read its own license state.

License changed

A license or product number was changed, leaving the stored registration out of sync.

System date wrong

A Windows clock set to the wrong year makes a valid licence look expired.

Blocked validation

A firewall stops QuickBooks reaching Intuit servers to validate, so it never registers.

How to Fix It

METHOD 1Check Your System Date FirstThirty seconds, rules out the silly one
1

Close QuickBooks. Right-click the clock on the Windows taskbar and choose Adjust date/time.

2

Confirm the date, and especially the year, are correct. A clock set to the wrong year makes a perfectly valid licence appear expired, and this happens more often than people expect after a CMOS battery fails.

3

Correct it if needed, then reopen QuickBooks and try to activate again before doing anything more invasive.

METHOD 2Rename the qbregistration.dat FileThe actual fix
1

Close QuickBooks completely on every machine.

2

Browse to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8. If that folder does not exist, check the v6 folder instead. ProgramData is hidden by default, so enable Hidden items under the View tab in File Explorer.

3

Find qbregistration.dat and rename it to qbregistration.dat.OLD. Do not delete it, so you can put it back if needed.

4

Reopen QuickBooks. It will prompt you to register. Enter your licence and product numbers, and it writes a fresh registration file. Have your numbers ready from your purchase confirmation email or CAMPS before you start.

METHOD 3Repair the Program From the Tool HubActivation still failing
1

Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub, go to Program Problems, and run Quick Fix my Program. This closes stuck background processes that can block activation.

2

If that does not resolve it, go to Installation Issues and run the 3371 Error Fix, which specifically targets damaged licence data.

METHOD 4Recover Your Licence NumberYou do not have your numbers
1

Sign in to the Customer Account Maintenance Portal (CAMPS) on the Intuit website. Your licence number and product number are listed against your account there. If you bought from a retail store, the sticker on the original CD envelope carries them.

Do This Before You Reinstall

Renaming qbregistration.dat is non-destructive and takes two minutes. A full reinstall takes an hour and carries far more risk. Always try the rename first. Neither action touches your company file, which is stored separately, so your accounting data is never at stake here.
