How to Fix Sage 50 Bank Reconciliation Errors

Sage 50 bank reconciliation shows a difference between the statement balance and the Sage balance that cannot be resolved -- transactions appear to match but the totals don't balance.

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, Sage 50 reconciliation discrepancies almost always trace to transactions marked as cleared that weren't on the statement, an incorrect opening balance, or transactions that were edited or deleted after being reconciled. Unlike Xero or QuickBooks, Sage 50 does not lock reconciled transactions by default -- making it easier to accidentally alter them.

How to Fix Sage 50 Bank Reconciliation Errors

METHOD 1Run the Bank Reconciliation Report + Find the DifferenceIdentify the source first
1

Reports and gt; Banking and gt; Bank Reconciliation Report and gt; select the bank account and the last successfully reconciled period and gt; run. Compare the "Outstanding transactions" list against your bank statement -- any transaction on the Sage list that is not on the bank statement is a phantom cleared item causing the discrepancy.

2

Unmark the phantom cleared item: open the reconciliation for the affected period and gt; find the transaction marked as cleared that should not be and gt; uncheck it. The difference will reduce by that transaction's amount.

METHOD 2Check for Edited or Deleted Reconciled TransactionsTransaction changed after reconciliation
1

Reports and gt; Audit Trail and gt; filter to the bank account and the period of the discrepancy and gt; look for edits or deletions to transactions that were previously reconciled. Restore the original transaction (re-enter it if deleted, correct the amount if edited) and gt; re-reconcile the affected period.

METHOD 3Correct the Opening BalanceDiscrepancy from initial Sage 50 setup
1

If the reconciliation has never balanced since Sage 50 was set up: the opening bank balance was entered incorrectly. Maintain and gt; Chart of Accounts and gt; find the bank account and gt; check the opening balance matches the actual bank statement balance on the setup date. Create a correcting journal entry to adjust the difference if needed.
