How to Fix Sage 50 Cannot Open Company File

Sage 50 displays an error when opening the company file -- "Cannot open company file" or "The company file is already in use" or "Pervasive database error".

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, Sage 50 company file open errors almost always trace to one of three causes: the Pervasive/Actian database service is not running, a lock file (.SAJ) was not cleared from a previous crash, or the data path is inaccessible on the network. The fix is different for each -- identifying which applies resolves it quickly.

How to Fix Sage 50 Cannot Open Company File

METHOD 1Restart Pervasive/Actian Database ServiceMost common cause
1

Windows+R and gt; services.msc and gt; find "Pervasive PSQL Workgroup Engine" or "Actian PSQL Workgroup Engine" and gt; right-click and gt; Restart. If the service is Stopped: click Start. Sage 50 requires this service to access its data files -- if it is not running, the company file cannot be opened.

2

After restarting the service: retry opening the company file. Set the service to Automatic startup so it starts automatically after a reboot.

METHOD 2Delete the Lock File (.SAJ or .LCK)File stuck in use after crash
1

Close Sage 50 on all workstations. Navigate to the company data folder (typically C:\Sage\Accounts\COMPANY or the server path). Look for files with the same name as the company file but with a .SAJ or .LCK extension and gt; delete them. These lock files are created when Sage opens a company and deleted when it closes normally -- a crash leaves them behind. Restart Sage and retry opening the company.

METHOD 3Verify Data Path + Run Data MaintenanceNetwork path issue or data corruption
1

Confirm the data folder path is accessible: browse to it in File Explorer from the affected machine. If it's a network path that is disconnected: reconnect the network drive. If the path is accessible: Sage 50 and gt; Help and gt; About and gt; confirm the data path shown matches the actual location. Run File and gt; Data Maintenance and gt; Check Data to identify and repair any data integrity issues.
