How to Fix QuickBooks Error OL-222
QuickBooks displays: "OL-222: We're having trouble getting information from your financial institution." when trying to set up or refresh an online banking connection.
Error OL-222 is an online banking branding file or financial institution profile error. At QuickFix Bookkeeping, OL-222 is distinct from OL-203 (connection timeout) and OL-393 (credential failure): OL-222 specifically means QB couldn't retrieve or parse the financial institution's branding file or connection profile — the metadata QB uses to know how to connect to your specific bank. The fix targets the bank's profile in QB, not the internet connection or credentials.
OL-222 vs OL-203 vs OL-393 — The OL Series Distinctions
OL-222 — this page
Branding file / financial institution profile error. QB can't retrieve the bank's connection profile. Fix: reset bank connection, clear branding cache, or manually set up connection.
OL-203
Connection timeout — QB reached out to the bank but the connection timed out before completing. Network or firewall issue. Fix: IE settings, firewall, SSL state.
OL-393
Credential failure — QB connected but the bank rejected the username/password. Fix: update credentials in bank feed settings.
What Causes QuickBooks Error OL-222?
Corrupted or Outdated Bank Branding File
Primary OL-222 cause — QB stores a "branding file" for each financial institution containing the bank's logo, connection settings, and server URLs. When this file is corrupted or outdated (because the bank changed its servers), QB can't establish the connection and reports OL-222. Resetting the bank connection forces QB to download a fresh branding file.
Bank Changed its Direct Connect Server
The financial institution changed its Direct Connect server URL or OFX endpoints. QB's stored profile still points to the old server which no longer exists or has changed its response format. Intuit periodically updates bank profiles — updating QB brings the latest profile for the bank.
Bank Merged or Rebranded
A bank merger or rebrand changed the financial institution's QB profile ID. QB looks for the old bank profile and can't find it in Intuit's updated directory, returning OL-222. Disconnecting and searching for the new bank name resolves this.
Corrupted QB Online Banking Data
QB's internal online banking data files (used to cache bank profiles) are corrupted. Running the Verify/Rebuild process or using the QB Tool Hub's program problem fix can repair corrupted online banking cache files.
QB Version Too Old for Bank's Current Profile
Intuit removes old bank profile formats from older QB versions when banks upgrade their connection standards. If QB is outdated, it can no longer parse the bank's current profile format and shows OL-222. Updating QB brings compatible profile parsers.
Firewall Blocking Branding File Download
During initial setup, QB downloads the bank's branding file from Intuit's servers. A firewall blocking this specific download endpoint produces OL-222 during setup. Temporarily disabling the firewall and retrying the bank setup confirms this cause.
