How to Fix QuickBooks TLS Error

QuickBooks displays a TLS error when connecting to Intuit services -- payroll updates, bank feeds, or QB account login -- typically stating "There is a problem with the security of your connection" or referencing SSL/TLS.

QuickBooks requires TLS 1.2 for all secure connections to Intuit servers. At QuickFix Bookkeeping, TLS errors appear when Windows or Internet Explorer's security settings have TLS 1.2 disabled, the Windows certificate store is outdated, or an older QB version is trying to use a deprecated protocol. Intuit retired TLS 1.0 and 1.1 -- TLS 1.2 must be enabled for QB to function.

TLS 1.2 Requirement -- Quick Check

Verify TLS 1.2 is enabled in 30 seconds: press Win+R and gt; type inetcpl.cpl and gt; Advanced tab and gt; scroll to Security section and gt; confirm "Use TLS 1.2" is checked. If it is not checked: check it and gt; OK and gt; retry QB. This single setting resolves the majority of TLS errors in QuickBooks.

How to Fix QuickBooks TLS Error

METHOD 1Enable TLS 1.2 in Internet OptionsResolves most QB TLS errors
1

INETCPL.CPL and gt; Advanced tab and gt; Security section and gt; check "Use TLS 1.2" and gt; uncheck "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" and gt; uncheck "Use TLS 1.0" and "Use TLS 1.1" if they are checked (Intuit no longer supports these) and gt; OK and gt; restart QB and retry.

2

Clear SSL state: INETCPL.CPL and gt; Content tab and gt; Clear SSL State and gt; OK. This removes cached TLS session data that may be forcing an old protocol version.

METHOD 2Run Windows Update + Update QBOutdated certificates or QB version
1

Windows Settings and gt; Update and Security and gt; install all pending Windows Updates and gt; restart. Windows Updates include root certificate updates required for TLS 1.2 validation. Also: Help and gt; Update QuickBooks Desktop and gt; Reset Update and gt; Get Updates and gt; restart. Older QB releases do not support TLS 1.2 -- updating resolves this.

METHOD 3Check Registry TLS Setting + Fix via Tool HubTLS 1.2 enabled in IE but still failing
1

Tool Hub and gt; Installation Issues and gt; QB Install Diagnostic Tool and gt; run and gt; restart. The diagnostic tool repairs the TLS components used by QB's update and banking connections. If a Group Policy overrides the IE TLS setting: the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2 must be confirmed enabled at the system level.

TLS Error Persisting After Enabling TLS 1.2 and Windows Update?

Persistent TLS errors after enabling TLS 1.2 usually mean a Group Policy or security appliance is overriding the setting -- we identify the override and configure the correct exception.
