Your payroll data is safe. Error 15102 is an update access error — your company file, payroll records, and tax history are completely unaffected. Once the update path is corrected, the update downloads normally.

Shared Download Points to Invalid Path

Most common cause — Shared Download is enabled in QB's update settings but the path it points to no longer exists (mapped drive disconnected, network share moved, or folder deleted). QB tries to write to this location and immediately fails with 15102.

Running Update from a Workstation in Multi-User Mode

In multi-user environments, payroll updates should be downloaded on the server/host computer, not a workstation. When a workstation tries to run the update in multi-user mode, QB returns 15102 because the workstation's update path settings conflict with the server's.

Insufficient Windows Admin Rights

QuickBooks is running under a Windows user account that does not have write permissions to the update folder. Without admin rights, QB cannot create or modify files in the designated download path.

Disconnected Mapped Network Drive

Will missing a payroll update cause payroll to calculate incorrectly?

Yes, potentially. Payroll updates contain current tax tables — the rates, thresholds, and calculations for federal and state payroll taxes. If your tax tables are out of date, QuickBooks may calculate withholding amounts incorrectly, underpaying or overpaying employee taxes. Intuit releases payroll tax table updates periodically throughout the year when tax rates change. Press F2 in QuickBooks and check the Tax Table Version in Product Information — it shows the date of your current tax table.
