How to Fix NetSuite Period Close Error

A checklist task will not go green, the period refuses to close, or users hit The accounting period is closed when trying to post a legitimate transaction.

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, the distinction that resolves most of these: locking is not closing. NetSuite gives you separate locks for A/R, A/P, and all transactions, plus a final close. Half the panic around period close comes from someone locking a subledger and everyone else assuming the period is shut.

The Four Levels of Restriction

LevelWhat It BlocksReversible?
Lock A/RCustomer-side postings onlyYes, just untick
Lock A/PVendor-side postings onlyYes, just untick
Lock AllEvery transaction, journals still allowed by permitted rolesYes, just untick
ClosedEverything, including journalsYes, but requires the reopen permission

How to Fix a NetSuite Period Close Error

METHOD 1Users Cannot Post to a Legitimate PeriodUsually a lock, not a close
1

Go to Setup, Accounting, Manage Accounting Periods and find the period in question.

2

Look at the columns. If Lock A/R, Lock A/P, or Lock All is ticked but Closed is not, the period is only locked. Untick the relevant lock and the postings work again. No special permission is needed.

3

Confirm the transaction date actually falls in the period you think it does. NetSuite assigns the period from the transaction date, not from today, so a back-dated entry lands in a closed period without warning.

METHOD 2Reopen a Closed PeriodPermission required
1

A closed period can be reopened, unlike Sage 50. You need the Period Closing Management permission on your role, which is not granted by default.

2

In Manage Accounting Periods, untick Closed on the period and save. You must reopen periods in reverse order: you cannot reopen March while April is still closed.

3

Post your correction, then close the periods again in order. Anything you post into a reopened period changes financials that may already have been reported, so tell whoever owns the reporting.

METHOD 3A Checklist Task Will Not CompleteBlocked upstream
1

The Period Close Checklist runs in strict order. A task will not go green until every task above it is complete, so the failure you see is often not the failure you have.

2

Resolve Date and Exchange Rate Exceptions is the usual blocker. It lists transactions whose posting period does not match their date. Open each one and correct the period or the date.

3

In a multi-subsidiary account, every subsidiary must complete its own tasks before the parent can close. One subsidiary with an open exception holds up the whole group.

METHOD 4Unbalanced or Unposted Transactions Blocking the CloseFind them before you start
1

Before running the close, reconcile every bank and credit card account, review the A/R and A/P aging, clear any pending approvals, and run the trial balance to confirm it balances. A close that fails on unposted data is slower to unpick than one you never started. Our bank feed guide covers the reconciliation side.

Lock Early, Close Late

The practical pattern for month end: lock A/R and A/P as soon as the operational cut-off passes, so nobody adds new customer or vendor activity while you work. Leave the period itself open until the accounting team has finished its adjusting journals, then close. Closing first and reopening repeatedly is how period-close errors multiply.
