How to Fix MYOB Network Error

Workstations cannot see the company file, MYOB reports a network error on opening, or multi-user access drops out during the day.

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, the principle that resolves most of these: one machine hosts, everyone else connects. MYOB network problems are almost always a server service that is not running, a firewall blocking the connection, or more than one machine trying to host the same file.

What Causes This

Server service stopped

The MYOB server service is not running on the host machine, so nothing can connect.

Firewall blocking

Windows Firewall or antivirus is blocking the ports MYOB needs between machines.

Wrong network path

Workstations are pointed at a mapped drive letter that has changed or disconnected.

Wireless instability

Wifi drops that are invisible in normal use are enough to break a live database connection.

How to Fix It

METHOD 1Start at the ServerNobody can connect
1

Confirm MYOB opens the company file on the server itself first. If it fails there, the problem is not the network at all and you should stop troubleshooting workstations.

2

Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and confirm the MYOB server service is running. Restart it if it is stopped.

3

Open the service properties, go to the Recovery tab, and set First and Second failure to Restart the Service. A Windows update that stops the service and never restarts it is a very common Monday morning cause.

METHOD 2Open the FirewallServer is fine, workstations cannot reach it
1

Windows Firewall on the server blocks incoming MYOB connections by default after some updates.

2

Add inbound rules for the MYOB program files and the ports MYOB uses. Check MYOB's current documentation for the exact port numbers for your version, since these differ between releases.

3

Test by temporarily disabling the firewall on the server. If it works with the firewall off, you have confirmed the cause. Turn it back on and add proper rules rather than leaving it off.

METHOD 3Fix the Connection PathOne workstation cannot connect
1

If a single workstation fails while others work, the fault is local to that machine.

2

Browse to the shared folder in File Explorer from that workstation. If you cannot reach it there, MYOB certainly cannot.

3

Use the full network path rather than a mapped drive letter. Mapped drives disconnect and reconnect unpredictably, and a drive letter that has been reassigned breaks the connection silently.

METHOD 4Address Wireless DropsConnection fails intermittently
1

Intermittent failures during the day almost always mean wifi. A brief drop that is invisible when browsing is enough to sever a live database connection.

2

Put the server on a wired connection without exception, and workstations too where practical. If wireless is unavoidable, expect intermittent disconnections and save work frequently.

Never Host on a Workstation

The single most common cause of chronic MYOB network problems is more than one machine trying to host the same file, or a workstation hosting because someone opened the file locally once. Designate one machine as the host, confirm every other machine connects rather than hosts, and most intermittent network faults disappear permanently.
