How to Fix QuickBooks Error 1606

QuickBooks will not install or update, and Windows returns Error 1606: Could not access network location. The installer stops before it starts.

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, Error 1606 is a Windows problem, not a QuickBooks one. It fires when a registry entry points at a folder that no longer exists, or when the Windows user profile you are signed in as is damaged. It affects other Windows applications too. Fix the environment and the install completes normally.

What Causes This

Damaged Windows profile

The user account you are signed in as is corrupted, so the installer cannot resolve its own paths.

Bad registry subkey

A registry value points at a network or folder location that no longer exists.

No admin rights

The account lacks the administrator permission an install requires.

Third-party interference

Antivirus or a background service blocks the installer mid-run.

How to Fix It

METHOD 1Install as AdministratorTry this first

Restart the computer, then sign in with a Windows account that has full administrator rights. If you do not have those credentials, ask whoever manages the machine.

Right-click the QuickBooks installer and choose Run as administrator. Do not simply double-click it, since that runs it with your standard permissions.

Temporarily disable real-time antivirus for the duration of the install, then re-enable it once QuickBooks is installed.

METHOD 2Create a New Windows Admin UserProfile is damaged

A damaged Windows profile is the single most common cause. Go to Settings, Accounts, Family & other users, then Add someone else to this PC.

Choose I do not have this person's sign-in information, then Add a user without a Microsoft account. Enter a name and password and select Finish.

Select the new account, choose Change account type, set it to Administrator, then OK. Sign out, sign in as the new user, and install QuickBooks there. If the install succeeds, your original profile was the fault.

METHOD 3Install in Selective StartupThird-party conflict

Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and select OK.

On the General tab, choose Selective startup and Load system services. On the Services tab, tick Hide all Microsoft services, select Disable all, then untick Hide all Microsoft services again.

Crucially, scroll the list and make sure Windows Installer is still ticked. Disabling it is a common mistake that guarantees the install fails. Select OK, restart, and install QuickBooks. Return msconfig to Normal startup afterward.

METHOD 4Run the Install Diagnostic ToolStill failing

Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub, go to Installation Issues, and run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool. Let it run for up to 20 minutes without interrupting it, even if it appears frozen. It repairs the .NET Framework, MSXML, and Visual C++ components the installer depends on. Restart, then retry the install.
