How to Fix QuickBooks Banking Error 102

You went to download bank transactions and QuickBooks returned: "QuickBooks is unable to complete your request. Please try again later. [Error 102]" — or a variant saying the bank connection has been interrupted.

Most guides on Error 102 send you straight to QuickBooks settings and reconnection steps. At QuickFix Bookkeeping, the first thing we tell clients is something every other guide buries at the bottom: the problem is almost always on your bank's side, not QuickBooks — and no amount of QuickBooks troubleshooting will fix a bank server issue.

The QuickFix Bookkeeping Distinction

Error 102 is a bank-side error. QuickBooks is telling you it cannot reach your bank — not that QuickBooks itself is broken.

What most guides recommend first

Disconnect and reconnect your bank account in QuickBooks. Update credentials. Clear browser cache. Try a different browser. — Most of these steps have no effect on a bank server problem and waste time when the bank is simply down for maintenance.

What to do first

Log into your bank's website directly — outside of QuickBooks. If you see maintenance notices, slow loading, or missing data there, the issue is confirmed to be on the bank's end. Wait 24 hours. Error 102 almost always resolves on its own once the bank's service is restored.

The triage question: Can you log into your bank's website directly and see your full transaction history and account summary without any issues? Yes → the problem is in QuickBooks' connection settings (credentials or account link). No → the problem is at your bank. Wait for them to resolve it.

What Is QuickBooks Banking Error 102?

Related: Error 105 · Error 103 · Error 108

What it means

Error 102 means QuickBooks Online attempted to connect to your bank's server to download transactions and the connection failed or returned no data. This happens when the bank's server is under maintenance, temporarily down, or experiencing issues transferring data to third-party applications. It can also occur when login credentials have changed or when a new account has not yet had online banking activated.

Your financial data is safe. Error 102 does not corrupt or delete any existing transactions in QuickBooks. Only the new download of recent transactions is blocked.

Banking Error Quick Reference — Where 102 Fits

102

This page — bank server down or maintenance

103

Login credentials incorrect or changed

105

Bank server — data transfer failure

108

Bank message or alert requiring action

102 vs 105: Both are bank-server errors that often appear together. Error 105 is slightly more specific — it indicates the bank's server responded but failed to transfer data. Error 102 often means the server was unreachable or returned no response at all. The fix for both is the same: check the bank's website status, wait, and manually refresh.

What Causes QuickBooks Banking Error 102?

🏦

Bank Server Maintenance

Primary cause — Your bank's server is undergoing planned or emergency maintenance. Most banks schedule maintenance overnight or on weekends. QuickBooks cannot connect during this window and returns Error 102.

Bank Server Outage

An unplanned bank server outage prevents data transfer entirely. Unlike maintenance, outages are unannounced and can last from minutes to several hours. The fix is identical — wait for the bank to restore service.

🔑

Changed Login Credentials

Your bank password was changed, or the bank updated its security requirements and the credentials stored in QuickBooks are now incorrect. QuickBooks cannot authenticate and returns 102 or 103.

🔔

Bank Alert or Action Required

Your bank has posted a notification, terms update, security question, or MFA requirement on their website that requires your acknowledgement before data can be shared. Until you log in and respond to it, the bank blocks the feed.

🆕

New Account Not Activated

A recently opened bank account may not yet have online banking activated, or the bank requires an initial login on their website before allowing third-party connections. QuickBooks cannot connect to an account that has not yet been enabled for online access.

🌐

Intuit–Bank Connection Issue

In some cases, the issue is not with your bank's public website but with the data connection between Intuit's aggregation service and the bank's API. This affects all users of that bank simultaneously and requires Intuit's engineering team to resolve — not something the user can fix.

How to Fix QuickBooks Banking Error 102

Run the triage check first — it tells you whether to wait or to act, and saves wasted troubleshooting time.

Step 0 — Triage Before You Touch QuickBooks

Do this now — takes 2 minutes

1

Open your bank's website directly in a browser — not through QuickBooks.

2

Log in with your normal credentials. Check for any alerts, notices, or prompts.

3

Confirm you can see your account summary, transaction history, and statements without errors.

Read your result

Bank site works fine → The issue is in QuickBooks' connection or credentials. Move to Method 1 (manual refresh) or Method 2 (credentials update).

Bank site has issues / maintenance / alerts → The issue is on the bank's end. Move to Method 3 (wait and import manually). No QuickBooks troubleshooting will fix a bank server problem.

METHOD 1 Manually Refresh the Bank Connection If bank site works — try this first

If your bank's website works correctly, a manual refresh in QuickBooks forces a fresh connection attempt and often clears a transient 102 error that lingered after a brief bank hiccup.

1

In QuickBooks Online: Go to Bookkeeping → Transactions → Bank Transactions. Click the Update button at the top right. If prompted for Multi-Factor Authentication, enter the code your bank sends and click Continue to Update.

2

In QuickBooks Self-Employed: Click the gear icon → Bank accounts → Refresh all.

3

If the error persists after the first manual refresh, wait 2–3 hours and try again. Running 2–3 manual refreshes over a few hours often resolves transient 102 errors without any reconnection steps.

QuickFix tip: A manual update keeps the bank connection active for 90 days. Even if new transactions are not downloading right now due to the error, the connection itself is preserved and new transactions will backfill once the bank's service is restored.

METHOD 2 Update Login Credentials and Clear Bank Alerts If credentials changed or bank has unread alerts

If the triage check showed your bank site works but QuickBooks still returns 102, the most common cause is outdated credentials in QuickBooks — or a bank alert that requires your acknowledgement before data sharing is allowed again.

1

Address bank alerts first: Log into your bank website and look carefully for any notices, new terms, security questions, or update prompts that need your acknowledgement. Accept or dismiss them. Banks often block third-party data access until these are addressed.

2

Update credentials in QuickBooks: In QuickBooks Online go to Bookkeeping → Transactions → Bank Transactions. Find the affected bank account and click the Edit (pencil) icon. Select Edit sign-in info and re-enter your current bank username and password. Save.

3

After updating credentials and clearing any bank alerts, click Update to attempt a fresh connection.

METHOD 3 Wait 24–48 Hours and Import Transactions Manually If bank site has issues — the correct action

If the triage check confirmed the problem is on your bank's end — this is the correct response. Bank maintenance typically resolves within 24 hours. Attempting to disconnect and reconnect your bank account during this window often causes additional problems and is unnecessary. While waiting, import transactions manually so your books stay current.

1

Do not disconnect your bank account from QuickBooks. Leave the connection as-is. Disconnecting and reconnecting during a bank outage can cause transaction duplication issues when the feed resumes.

2

Import transactions manually while waiting: Download a .CSV or .OFX file of your recent transactions from your bank's website. In QuickBooks, go to Bookkeeping → Transactions → Bank Transactions → Upload transactions. Upload the file to keep your books current.

3

After 24 hours, try a manual update in QuickBooks (Bookkeeping → Bank Transactions → Update). If the bank has resolved their issue, the feed will resume automatically. If 48 hours pass and the error persists, proceed to Method 4.

QuickFix tip: When manually importing transactions that will later be auto-downloaded when the feed resumes, QuickBooks will detect duplicates and flag them for your review — it will not double-post them automatically. Review the Banking page carefully after the feed resumes to dismiss any flagged duplicates.

METHOD 4 Disconnect and Reconnect the Bank Account Only if error persists after 48 hours

If Error 102 persists for more than 48 hours after the bank's website is fully working, the connection between QuickBooks and your bank may need to be reset. This is the last resort for 102 — not the first step — because it requires re-authenticating and can cause transaction duplication if not done carefully.

Before disconnecting: Note the date of your most recently matched transaction. After reconnecting, QuickBooks will import 90 days of transactions — you will need to review for duplicates from before the reconnection date.

1

Go to Bookkeeping → Transactions → Bank Transactions. Click the pencil icon next to the affected account. Select Edit account info and check the Disconnect this account on save option. Click Save.

2

Click Add Account at the top right of the Banking page. Search for your bank and reconnect using your current credentials. Follow the MFA prompts from your bank.

3

After reconnecting, QuickBooks will import up to 90 days of recent transactions. Review the Banking page for any duplicates from the period when you manually imported and resolve them using the Match function.

METHOD 5 Try Incognito Mode and Clear Browser Cache If using QBO in a browser

For QuickBooks Online users accessing via a browser, cached session data or browser extensions can occasionally interfere with the bank connection process. This is rarely the root cause of Error 102 but is worth trying if the bank site works and the other methods have not resolved it.

1

Open an incognito or private browsing window: Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N. Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P. Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N. Log into QuickBooks Online in the private window and attempt the bank update.

2

If it works in incognito, clear your regular browser's cache: Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cached images and files → Clear. Then retry in the normal window.

3

If incognito also fails — the issue is not browser cache. Return to the bank-side diagnosis and confirm the bank's service status before attempting more QuickBooks-side fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Banking Error 102

Will I lose transaction data while Error 102 is active?
No. Existing transactions already in QuickBooks are completely unaffected. When the bank connection resumes after Error 102 is resolved, QuickBooks will automatically download all transactions from the period during which the connection was interrupted — up to 90 days back. If you manually imported transactions during the wait period, QuickBooks will flag potential duplicates for your review before posting them. No data is lost.
What is the difference between Error 102 and Error 105?
Both are bank-server errors and often appear together. Error 102 typically means QuickBooks received no response from the bank's server — the server was unreachable or returned an empty response. Error 105 means the bank's server responded but failed to transfer the transaction data — the connection was established but the data transfer failed. In practice, the fix for both is identical: check the bank's website status, wait for the bank to restore service, and manually refresh. Both almost always resolve within 24–48 hours without any action on the QuickBooks side.
Should I disconnect and reconnect my bank account to fix Error 102?
Not immediately, and not if the problem is on the bank's side. Disconnecting and reconnecting is Method 4 — the last resort, not the first step. Doing it while the bank's server is down achieves nothing because the new connection will also fail. Doing it after the bank resolves their issue but before the feed resumes naturally can cause transaction duplication. Wait 24–48 hours. If the error persists after the bank's website is fully operational, then disconnect and reconnect with care, reviewing for duplicates afterwards.
How do I prevent Error 102 from disrupting my bookkeeping?
Error 102 from bank maintenance is unavoidable — banks will always have maintenance windows. The best prevention is a workflow that does not depend entirely on automatic bank feeds. Keep QuickBooks current by reconciling at least weekly rather than waiting for the monthly bank statement. Know how to manually import transactions via CSV from your bank's website — this skill eliminates the impact of any Error 102 episode. Set up bank alerts through your bank's notification system so you are immediately aware of any maintenance windows or outages before they affect your QuickBooks feed.
